In Sweden, one million minks a year are suffering on factory fur farms.

Minks on Swedish fur farms are crammed into small wire cages covered with faeces and infested with maggots. Dead and dying animals are left to rot in their cages, while others suffer from open wounds, often as a result of cannibalism or self-mutilation. This cruelty has to stop.

According to a recent poll, 78 per cent of the Swedish public want to see fur farming banned across the country. Sweden's last chinchilla farm closed down in November 2014, and fox farming has already been phased out – so only mink farms are left.

International pressure will help ensure that a ban on all fur farming is on the political agenda. Please send a message to Sweden's Minister for Rural Affairs urging him to ban fur farms now.

Dear Mr Kullgren,

I am writing to urge you to ban fur farming in Sweden and prevent the suffering of around 1 million minks every year.

PETA's recent video exposé [http://petauk.org/originassured] demonstrates that fur farms are living nightmares for animals. Video footage taken during visits to 20 per cent of Sweden's mink farms documented minks who were crammed into small wire cages covered with faeces and infested with maggots. Dead and dying animals were left to rot in their cages, while others suffered from open wounds, often as a result of cannibalism or self-mutilation.

Not only is the fur industry cruel, it's also toxic and harmful to the environment. A 2013 study by consultancy firm CE Delft compared the impact of fur production with the production of synthetic textiles and found that the climate change impact of a mink coat was up to 10 times higher than that of a faux-fur coat. Sweden is known around the world for its green credentials, but mink farming is most definitely not green.

I was delighted to learn that the last remaining chinchilla fur farm in Sweden closed down in 2014 and that fox farming has also been phased out in the country. Please join the UK, Austria and others in banning all fur farms.
